Has Adobe Premiere Pro become too expensive for you? You can always check out DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic. The free version of the video editing software offers a ton of video editing and color grading features. The paid studio version ($295) offers even more functionalities.

For those who are new to this software, DaVinci Resolve combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, and more. Currently, you can download DaVinci Resolve 19 for free. 19 is the newest version of the software, which was released in April 2024. As of this writing, this version is available for download worldwide. You cannot just download it with one click like before. Blackmagic requires to register – before your free download you will be asked to register your free version of DaVinci Resolve.

System Requirements

The system requirements for the 19 version are similar to the previous one:

For Mac:

  • Mac 10.15 Catalina or later.
  • 16 GB of system memory
  • 32 GB of memory (for Fusion)
  • Integrated GPU or discrete GPU (dedicated memory separate from the CPU) with at least 2GB of VRAM.
  • GPU to support Metal or OpenCL 1.2

For Windows:

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • 16 GB of system memory
  • 32 GB of memory (for Fusion)
  • Integrated GPU or discrete GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM
  • GPU to support OpenCL 1.2
  • NVIDIA/AMD/Intel GPU Driver version (as required by your GPU)
  • For NVIDIA, make sure to use the most recent driver version.

What’s New in DaVinci Resolve 19?

The new version include several new features. You can now host project libraries using Blackmagic Cloud and collaborate on the same timeline with multiple users. The new proxy generator creates proxies linked to camera originals. The new version supports Apple M1 Ultra, which gives the user a power image processing engine. DaVinci Resolve 19 has several significant AI-powered enhancements through its DaVinci Neural Engine. The new IntelliTrack AI feature enables advanced tracking and stabilization in the color and Fusion pages, as well as automatic audio panning in Fairlight based on visual movement.

For colorists, there are several major additions: the new ColorSlice six vector grading palette for richer film-like colors, UltraNR AI-powered noise reduction for better image clarity, and a Film Look Creator that can emulate cinematic qualities like halation, bloom, grain, and flicker. The color page also now supports marker overlays and annotations.

The editing experience has been enhanced too with new multi-source capabilities. Editors can now work directly with transcribed audio to find speakers and edit timeline clips. The cut page includes new broadcast replay tools for live multi-camera editing, with features like points of interest markers and instant replay with speed control.

There’s also improved integration with OpenTimelineIO for better compatibility with other editing software.

In Fusion, VFX artists get expanded USD (Universal Scene Description) tools and a new MultiPoly rotoscoping tool that displays all masks in a single list for easier management. The uVolume feature allows direct import of volumetric VDB files for effects like smoke and fire.

The Fairlight audio toolset has been significantly expanded with new AI-powered features. These include automatic audio panning that follows video movement, AI-based dialogue separation, and a ducker track effect for automatic level management. The audio capabilities now also include full support for ambisonic surround sound up to 5th order.

For enterprise users, Blackmagic Cloud now includes an Organizations app that allows larger companies to manage teams, share projects more efficiently, and handle DaVinci Resolve Studio licenses across groups. This makes it easier to manage collaborative workflows and license allocation within larger organizations.
